Brig. Brigadier General Mark Stackle began his Army career after graduating from Gonzaga University with a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in History. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his Family Medicine residency at Tripler Army Medical Center, Hawaii, where he served as Chief Resident.
After completion of his residency training, Stackle commanded the United States Army Health Clinic in Babenhausen, Germany. He then served as the Command Surgeon with the 526th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Stackle completed the Madigan Leader and Faculty Development Fellowship during which he earned his master’s degree in business administration from Pacific Lutheran University.
After completion of his fellowship, he served as a faculty physician with the Eisenhower Army Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program at Fort Eisenhower, Georgia, before serving as a Family Medicine Residency Program Director at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Subsequently, he was assigned as the Deputy Commander for Clinical Services at the U.S. Army Medical Activity Japan. From 2017 to 2019, Stackle served as the Command Surgeon for the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado, and deployed as the United States Forces Afghanistan Command Surgeon in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel and Resolute Support. He then served as the Commander of the United States Army Institute of Surgical Research, followed by an assignment as the Medical Corps Branch Proponency Officer at the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence. Stackle was the Commander of Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas prior to serving as the Command Surgeon for U.S. Army Forces Command and subsequently, U.S. Army Western Hemisphere Command. He currently serves in Sembach Germany as the Commanding General, Medical Readiness Command, Europe and as Director, Defense Health Network Europe, effective 13 May 2026.
A graduate of the U.S. Army War College, Stackle’s military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, and the Air Assault badge. He is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit and has been awarded the “A” Proficiency Designator by the Army Surgeon General. Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
