Mary Ann Spott, Ph.D. is the acting division chief of the Armed Services Blood Program at the Defense Health Agency, Falls Church, Virginia. Spott directs 20 blood centers, 47 transfusion services, eight contingency depots and is the military blood representative to NATO.

She joined the ASBP in 2023 as the Deputy Division Chief of Organizational Optimization/Research and Development and was responsible for increasing the collections of blood and blood products globally across the Department of Defense. She also coordinated information technology improvements and instituted a new donor program, which enhances the donor registration process.

In 2006, Ms. Spott led the establishment of the DOD’s first and only trauma system and trauma patient registry. She was responsible for developing the strategic vision for trauma operations across the DOD and was instrumental in building the trauma system from the ground up. As the Deputy Director of the Joint Trauma System, she managed all aspects of the program to include the DOD Trauma Registry and its integrated clinical registries and databases. In 2016 the Secretary of Defense awarded the Distinguished Civilian Award to Ms. Spott for her outstanding work at the JTS. In 2020 Ms. Spott and the JTS team were awarded the Henry Jackson Foundation Heroes of Military Medicine award.

Prior to her leadership at the JTS, she was the Associate Director for Management Information Systems and Trauma Registry at Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation and worked at the Pennsylvania State Health Data Center, Division of Health Statistics and Research, and Pennsylvania Cancer Registry.

Ms. Spott grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where she received her bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Scranton, and a Master of Business Administration at Pennsylvania State University, where she also completed a Master of Science degree in information systems. She also received a master’s degree in public administration and a certificate in economic development from Pennsylvania State University. She received her bachelor’s degree in health record administration from York College. Ms. Spott graduated from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Business Senior Executives Fellows Program in March 2010. In 2015, she earned her doctoral degree in leadership studies from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas.
