Information for Patients

Our goal is to be the primary treatment option for all TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries—service members from all branches, retirees, and family members—and veterans—from all locations across the MHS. Active duty service members may be eligible for funding for travel expenses if referred from outside of the catchment area of our locations.

We provide the full spectrum of severe/critical limb trauma care from initial medical and surgical treatment through rehabilitation and return to duty or return to work.

If you have questions or would like to contact the Amputations and Prosthetics team about your potential care, please visit the Amputations and Prosthetics Clearinghouse or send an email to: dha.ncr.Medical-Affairs.mbx.amputation-prosth-coe@health.mil.

We have the capacity to provide virtual consultation and accept clinically qualified TRICARE beneficiaries for treatment, including referrals from any geographic region.

Active Duty Service Members
We serve as your primary centers for the referral of all uniformed complex limb injuries and primary receiving centers if you’re evacuated from theater locations. All sites are positioned to accept combat casualties/ complex cases from the corresponding geographic theater in the event of foreign conflicts or overseas contingency operations.

All Other Beneficiaries
We’ve developed clinical criteria for cases to be prioritized for virtual consultation by or referral to an ARC location for treatment. To get a referral, you’ll follow TRICARE’s referral process.

The Amputations and Prosthetics Centers of Excellence provide standardized, state-of-the-art care for limb trauma across the MHS. The ARCs:

  • Have been effectively operating as Centers of Excellence for the rehabilitation of active and Reserve Component amputation patients since 2016, following a patient-centered model to optimize outcomes for individuals with limb loss.
  • Are international leaders in evidence-based, interdisciplinary care in the amputation and prosthetics specialties that fully integrate the use of orthotics and prosthetics. Amputations & Prosthetics Center of Excellence staff contributed to development of and utilize the following VA/DOD Clinical Practice Guidelines to guide clinical practice:
  • Offer detailed care coordination and provide complex care requiring the expertise of multiple trauma subspecialties to manage isolated limb injuries and systemic polytrauma patients with concurrent limb injuries.

Referrals from providers within the MHS may be initiated using the Referral Management 2.0 function in MHS GENESIS.

Referrals from TRICARE-authorized providers through the regional contractors are routed through the central DHA Integrated Referral Management and Appointing Center or using the Amputations and Prosthetics Clearinghouse to reach case managers and clinical staff directly.
