Information for Patients
The Burn Injuries and Wound Care Center of Excellence has a long history of providing comprehensive care to both military and civilian patients at the USAISR Burn Center. The multidisciplinary team provides specialized inpatient and outpatient care to those with burn and burn-like injuries including chemical, electrical, and inhalation injuries and complex wound treatment.
The USAISR’s team of almost 300 burn-care professionals — doctors, nurses, therapists, and many others — are passionately focused on the optimal recovery, restoration of function, and community reintegration of the burn survivors entrusted to our care. The Burn Injury and Wound Care Center of Excellence provides state-of-the-art critical care, surgery, and rehabilitation for patients with burn injuries and associated complications.
Burn injury and wound care involves a spectrum of care ranging from surgical interventions and inpatient care to outpatient rehabilitation and support service.
Clinical Capabilities:
- Burn Intensive Care Unit
- Full suite of surgical critical care services (co-located with BAMC’s Level I Trauma Center)
- Outpatient Burn Clinic
- Full range of services available are available from BAMC for consult (i.e. Cardiology, Neurology, etc.)
Other services organic to the USAISR Burn Center include:
- Rehabilitation, including inpatient and outpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy
- Nursing, including critical care, progressive care and medical surgical nursing
- Mental health, including psychologist on USAISR Burn Center staff, BAMC psychiatrist available by consultation
- Nutrition
- Pharmacy
- Respiratory Therapy
- Licensed Clinical Social Workers (case management)

If you're a TRICARE beneficiary, you'll follow TRICARE's referral process.
The following beneficiaries meeting the referral criteria may be referred to the Center of Excellence:
- Active duty service members (any location)
- Other beneficiaries requiring inpatient admission for burn injuries and wound care who are medically stabilized for transport
- Civilian patients from across the state of Texas
- All TRICARE beneficiaries for outpatient follow up burn care
Priority cases for virtual consultation by and referral to the Center of Excellence include a variety of diagnosis across the burn injury spectrum, chemical electrical, and inhalation injuries, and complex wound care. Outpatient and/or virtual follow-up care is also available to patients recovering from these injuries. Learn more about referral criteria and processes.
Information for Healthcare Teams
The USAISR Burn Center has maintained continuous American Burn Association verification since 2004, demonstrating capabilities consistent with the highest level of care within the field of burn care. ABA Burn Verification is renewed every three years following comprehensive program assessment and requires the USAISR Burn Center’s continuous participation in the ABA’s National Burn Repository for outcomes monitoring relative to established benchmarks.
Transport of patients from across the globe to the Burn Injuries and Wound Care Center of Excellence is available with the support of existing USAISR critical care burn flight teams who provide medical care during transportation of critically ill burn patients, including aeromedical evacuation of active duty service members who have sustained injury during theater operations or training activities.
The Burn Injuries and Wound Care Center of Excellence has developed and utilizes more than 35 organic Clinical Practice Guidelines related to the treatment and management of burn injuries and complex wounds.
The Burn Center of Excellence is home to a comprehensive research program focused on improving outcomes of patients who sustain burn injuries and related conditions including:
- Multi-system organ failure
- Inhalation injury
- Toxic epidermal necrolysis / Stevens-Johnson syndrome
- Necrotizing skin and soft tissue infections
- Many others
The synergy between the USAISR's laboratory scientists and clinical researchers makes the USAISR the U.S. government's premiere translational research center focusing on trauma, burns, and critical care of the combat wounded-able to take clinical problems to the laboratory and translate laboratory advances to the clinic, operating room, or battlefield. The center’s burn-centered research has led to fundamental advances in the multidisciplinary care of burn casualties which have become the standard for burn care throughout the world.
