Information for Patients

Our goal is to be the primary treatment option for all TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries—service members, retirees, and family members—within the National Capital Region catchment area (within 40 miles of Walter Reed or A.T. Augusta). We may also accept referrals from other geographic locations for complex total joint reconstruction cases. Active duty service members may be eligible for funding for travel expenses if referred from outside of the NCR catchment area.

The Orthopedic Adult Joint Reconstruction Care Center of Excellence is supported by a full Orthopedic Surgery Graduate Medical Educations and Residency Program covering 6+ sub-specialties as defined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education at Walter Reed and a partial GME program a A.T. Augusta, including Adult Reconstructive/ Arthroplasty residency program. The combined volume of total joint procedures performed by the shared staff at Walter Reed and A.T. Augusta is the highest within the MHS relative to other major medical centers. Lastly, the Center participates in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program registry (applied to total joint procedures), with performance attaining or exceeding national benchmarks.

The Orthopedic Adult Joint Reconstruction Care Center of Excellence has established a set of defined eligibility criteria for targeted specialty virtual consultations and/or referrals for total joint reconstruction, as clinically appropriate and when non-urgent referral is safe and reasonable.

Referrals from providers within the MHS may be initiated using the Referral Management 2.0 function in MHS GENESIS.

Referrals from TRICARE-authorized providers through the regional contractors are routed through the central DHA Integrated Referral Management and Appointing Center or through the Orthopedic Care Center of Excellence Clearinghouse to reach case managers and clinical staff directly.
