Walter Reed National Military Medical Center General Internal Medicine Services hosted a National Mammography Day event Oct. 16 as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, encouraging patients and staff to prioritize routine breast cancer screenings.

The event offered walk-in mammograms for the first 10 eligible participants who were due for screening. Walk-ins are not normally available through the clinic’s standard scheduling process.

With busy schedules and a variety of health-care needs to manage, it can be easy to place our own well-being on the back burner, said Adrienne Cobb, health educator for General Internal Medicine Services. “It’s part of self-care.”

The event was open to patients and staff and focused on the value of early screening and early detection. Organizers also shared breast cancer awareness resources and information on routine mammography. “We want women to remember to get their mammograms regularly,” Cobb said.

General Internal Medicine Services plans to continue its annual outreach effort to promote preventive care and help eligible patients stay current on recommended breast cancer screenings.

By making preventive screenings accessible and encouraging patients and staff to prioritize their health, Walter Reed supports a healthier and more resilient workforce. Early detection and timely care can help reduce health-related disruptions, enabling personnel to remain ready to support the medical center’s mission.
