Family Outreach Program

Since 1992, the DOD and the military services have been actively collecting maternal family reference specimens from family members of military personnel whose remains have not been recovered or identified from Southeast Asia, Cold War incidents, Korea, and World War II. The individual military Service Casualty Offices continue to seek family members to update their databases.

Advancements in the Identification Efforts for the Cabanatuan POW Camp

The identification of missing service members, especially those who were Prisoners of War in past conflicts, has profound impacts; not only on the military community, but especially on the living relatives of those lost.

DNA...It's In Our Blood

DNA Day at the AFMES is something the organization looks forward to every year as an opportunity to learn about the different sections of the AFDIL, while celebrating the victories of their cutting-edge laboratory and emerging technologies section.

Staff from the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL) that were instrumental in the development and validation of the Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) capture gather for a group picture at the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System, Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, February 13, 2025. SNP capture builds upon the mitochondrial genome (mtG) Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and hybridization capture methods validated in 2016. In 2015, knowing that traditional nuclear short tandem repeat methods would not work on samples requiring mtG NGS methods, AFDIL worked with the Department of Defense Small Business Innovation Research program and Defense Rapid Innovation group, and submitted a public proposal.
