Amputations and Prosthetics
The Amputation and Prosthetics Centers of Excellence are located at three Advanced Rehabilitation Centers at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, and Naval Medical Center San Diego. The Advanced Rehabilitation Centers address the complex needs of adults and children with severe limb dysfunction, including amputation.
Burn Injuries and Wound Care
The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research Burn Center cares for injured warfighters and their families from around the world, and for injured civilians from our local communities. Our team of almost 300 burn-care professionals are passionately focused on one goal: optimal recovery, restoration of function, and community reintegration of the burn survivors entrusted to their care.
Infectious Diseases and Preventive Medicine
The Infectious Diseases and Preventive Medicine Center of Excellence located at Brooke Army Medical Center aims to decrease complications associated with chronic wound infections with multidrug resistant organisms and provide comprehensive care of complex wound and infectious complications related to surgeries, combat, and trauma.
Maxillofacial Restoration
The Maxillofacial Restoration Centers of Excellence located at Brooke Army Medical Center and Naval Medical Center San Diego aim to restore health to beneficiaries following major reconstructive surgery for congenital, pathologic, or traumatic conditions of the mouth, face, and/or jaw. Maxillofacial Restoration involves multidisciplinary coordination across nine fully integrated clinical care pathways spanning from perioperative care to rehabilitation.
Ocular Trauma
The Ocular Trauma Centers of Excellence — located at four geographic regions across the United States — are designed to provide the full spectrum of ocular care, from initial medical and surgical treatment to rehabilitation. They allow for detailed care coordination and complex care requiring the expertise of multiple ophthalmic subspecialties to manage isolated and systemic polytrauma patients with concurrent ocular injuries.
Oncology
Located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the Murtha Cancer Center is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility providing cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies to patients and families.
Orthopedic Care
The Orthopedic Adult Joint Reconstruction Care Center of Excellence located in the National Capital Region with shared services at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center focuses on adult joint reconstruction procedures (hip and knee), which represent high-value surgical procedures that support readiness and demonstrate strong patient outcomes.
Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury
Located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the National Intrepid Center of Excellence is dedicated to advancing the diagnosis, treatment, and research of traumatic brain injury and associated health conditions, providing comprehensive care and support to service members and their families.
Substance Use Disorder
The Substance Use Disorder Center of Excellence is focused on inpatient treatment of substance use disorder and provides medically-monitored
high-intensity inpatient care, including 24/7 nursing and support staff coverage. SUD treatment involves a spectrum of care ranging from outpatient treatment to medical managed intensive inpatient services.
Transplant Surgery
The Transplant Surgery Center of Excellence, located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, provides full-spectrum kidney transplant consultation, surgical, and post-operative recovery services to active duty service members and other beneficiaries.
